Luxushobby Boot

A luxury hobby! What costs should I expect if I want to buy a boat? Owning a boat is a dream for many - freedom on the water, the wind in the sails or the gentle hum of the engine. But before the dream becomes reality, prospective boat owners should carefully analyse the financial aspects of this luxurious hobby. From the purchase to the running costs, there are numerous factors to consider.

The purchase costs - sailing boat or motor yacht?

The first and probably biggest investment is the purchase of the boat itself. The price range is enormous:

  • Small sailing boats are available from around 10,000 euros,
  • Medium-sized sailing yachts cost between 50,000 and 200,000 euros,
  • Motor yachts start at around 30,000 euros and can quickly reach several million euros. Second-hand boats are often cheaper, but can incur higher maintenance costs.

Mooring and harbour fees

Mooring fees are a significant cost factor. The costs vary greatly depending on the location and facilities of the harbour. A rough guide:

  • Inland waters: 50 to 150 euros per metre of boat length per year,
  • Mediterranean ports: 150 to 500 euros per metre of boat length per year,
  • Luxury marinas (e.g. Monaco): several thousand euros per metre per year

Running costs - maintenance, insurance and co.

In addition to harbour fees, there are numerous other costs:

  • Insurance: Depending on the type of boat and value - usually between 500 and 5,000 euros per year.
  • Maintenance and repairs: Regular inspections and servicing cost between 1,000 and 10,000 euros per year.
  • Fuel: Depending on their size and consumption, motor yachts can cost several thousand euros a year.
  • Winter storage: If the boat does not remain in the water all year round, a storage space must be rented - costs vary between 500 and 5,000 euros per season.
  • Staff: Depending on the size of the yacht, you will need staff, e.g. a skipper, technician - staff costs can quickly reach dizzying heights

Conclusion: an expensive pleasure

Owning a boat is undoubtedly a luxurious but also cost-intensive hobby. If you want to fulfil your dream of owning your own boat, you should carefully calculate not only the purchase costs, but above all the long-term expenditure. However, with realistic financial planning, nothing stands in the way of your maritime adventure.
