Description
KAT is a 23.96 m custom-built expedition sailing yacht, built in Itajaí, Brazil, in 2014 and refitted in 2021 and 2024. Designed by Nestor Volker, with naval architecture by Nestor Volker and Ricardo Marcelo Rinaldi, she features an H32 naval steel hull, a 316L stainless-steel superstructure and a hydraulic lifting keel. Her draft can be reduced from 5.20 m to 2.20 m, adding versatility when cruising, anchoring and accessing shallower waters. She is CE Category A certified by IMCI.
Built for long-range cruising and expeditions, KAT has completed two circumnavigations: the Expedição Oriente from 2014 to 2016 and the Voice of the Oceans programme from 2021 to 2025. She has been continuously maintained since 2014, with the same captain and crew throughout.
KAT is powered by twin 150 HP Volvo Penta D3 engines installed new in 2021, giving a cruising speed of 7 to 8 knots. Her range is approximately 2,000 nautical miles at cruising speed on both engines, and approximately 2,800 nautical miles at 5.5 knots on one engine. She carries 4,100 litres of fuel and 3,200 litres of fresh water, with a 200 l/h watermaker. Two 17.5 kW generators, lithium battery banks, solar panels, hydro generators and wind generators support her autonomy.
She is a ketch-rigged sloop with aluminium main and mizzen masts and a sail area of 334 m² upwind and 504 m² downwind. The mainsail, mizzen and genoa were renewed in 2025, and the 320 m² asymmetrical spinnaker dates from 2021.
On board, the saloon is divided into two areas, including a large dining table with seating for up to ten people and a smaller four-person table. There are three heads, all with showers, 64,000 BTU of air conditioning and full thermal insulation suitable for both tropical and sub-polar climates.
On deck, the cockpit accommodates more than 15 people around two fold-up tables and features twin helm stations. A hydraulic stern platform and hydraulic stern davits carry a 4.30 m Nautiflex RIB tender with a 40 HP Yamaha four-stroke outboard.
Navigation equipment includes a Simrad NSS integrated suite, a 24 NM Simrad radar, AIS Class B, Starlink and an ICOM SSB radio. KAT has three independent steering systems, each with its own autopilot.
