Smart yachts

Stephanie C. Stephanie C.

The maritime world is at the dawn of a new era. Yachts are becoming smarter, more connected and more comfortable. Digital systems are taking over complex manoeuvres, optimising energy flows and making sailing more efficient than ever before. What used to be a dream of the future is now standard equipment at many premium shipyards.

Autonomous docking - comfort instead of tension

Mooring in narrow harbours is a challenge even for experienced skippers. With Raymarine’s "DockSense", stress at the helm is a thing of the past: The system uses cameras and sensors to recognise obstacles and react automatically.
"We want to take the stress away from skippers, not the experience," emphasises a Raymarine spokesperson.
Yamaha’s "Helm Master EX" also offers high-tech convenience - precise manoeuvring at the touch of a button, even in windy conditions or currents. For owners, this means: more safety, more control, more enjoyment when sailing.

Digital control below deck

Many modern yachts are now floating data centres. Integrated systems can be used to monitor engine performance, energy consumption or tank levels in real time - conveniently via a display or app. Some shipyards, including Sunreef Yachts, are already integrating intelligent maintenance systems that recognise potential faults at an early stage. "Predictive maintenance replaces gut instinct - and saves time and money," explains an engineer at the shipyard.

Smart marinas: the luxury of digital harbours

High-tech is also moving into the harbours. Digital berth reservations, energy management systems and networked services are on the rise. Smart marinas are being built in Monaco, Barcelona and Amsterdam, offering yacht owners a seamless digital experience - from check-in to catering. In the near future, yachts will be able to register themselves and draw power while the owner is already enjoying a relaxed breakfast on board.

Technology needs trust

As digitalisation increases, so do the requirements for security. Data protection, software updates and stable networks are crucial for keeping systems reliable. "Technology doesn’t replace experience - it complements it," emphasises sailing trainer Lara Meier, who trains yacht owners in digital on-board management. Anyone who gets involved with smart technology should therefore also know how it works.

Conclusion: More comfort, safety and value retention

A new chapter in yacht ownership is opening up for owners and buyers. Autonomous manoeuvres, intelligent maintenance and digital ports make life on board more comfortable and at the same time ensure long-term value retention. The sea remains the same - but the experience on board is more modern, safer and more fascinating than ever before.
