There has been a shipping accident in southern China in which several people were injured and, according to the authorities, two people died. Other people are still missing.

A cargo ship has rammed into a bridge in the south of China, causing it to partially collapse. At least two people died as a result of the accident and several are still missing, the local authorities announced on the Weibo online platform. One sailor is said to have been slightly injured.

The freighter crashed into the traffic bridge southeast of the Guangzhou metropolis in Guangdong province early this morning (local time), causing the bridge above to collapse, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Bus crashes into the cargo hold of the freighter

According to preliminary investigations, two vehicles crashed into the water and three others fell onto the ship. Footage from the scene of the accident showed a bus that had crashed into the hold of the freighter. According to Chinese media reports, only the driver was on board the bus. According to CCTV, the head of the bus company was unable to reach his employee after the accident. There are currently no definite and clear findings as to the cause of the accident.

Chinese state television showed footage of the scene of the accident, in which the freighter can be seen wedged between two bridge pillars. There was a large gap in the two-lane bridge above it. The rescue workers who rushed to the scene were supported by divers who were searching for the missing persons at the scene of the accident.
